Menopause care

Perimenopause and menopause care in Dimapur

Perimenopause and menopause bring changes such as irregular periods, hot flushes, poor sleep, mood changes and vaginal dryness. At Evita GyneCare your symptoms and health risks are assessed, and the options — lifestyle measures, non-hormonal treatment and hormone therapy (HRT) — are explained so you can decide what is right for you.

Symptoms worth discussing

  • Periods becoming irregular, heavier or lighter, usually in your 40s
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Poor sleep, tiredness, low mood, anxiety or poor concentration
  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, or needing to pass urine more often
  • Joint aches
  • Any bleeding after a year without periods — this always needs checking, so book promptly

How it’s assessed here

  1. Your symptoms and how much they affect your life, your periods, and your personal and family history.
  2. Examination — blood pressure and weight, and breast and pelvic examination where needed.
  3. Tests only if they help. For most women over 45, menopause is diagnosed from symptoms; a blood test is not usually needed. Tests may be advised if you are younger or the picture is unclear.
  4. Your longer-term health — bone and heart health, and whether cervical screening is due.

Options

  • Lifestyle — regular activity including strength exercise, calcium and vitamin D, stopping smoking and limiting alcohol, all of which protect bones and heart.
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) — the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats. For many healthy women under 60, the benefits outweigh the risks, but this depends on your own health and is discussed individually.
  • Non-hormonal medicines for women who can’t or prefer not to take HRT.
  • Vaginal treatments — moisturisers or low-dose vaginal oestrogen for dryness and discomfort.
  • Contraception — still needed until periods have stopped for one year if you are over 50, or two years if under 50.

Common questions

Is HRT safe?

For many healthy women who start HRT before 60, or within ten years of menopause, the benefits usually outweigh the risks. It is not right for everyone; the doctor will go through your own risks, including breast, clot and heart risks, before you decide.

Do I need a blood test to know I’m in menopause?

Usually not if you are over 45 and have typical symptoms. Tests are used when you are younger or the cause of symptoms is unclear.

Do I still need contraception?

Yes, until your periods have stopped for one year if you are over 50, or two years if you are under 50.

Can menopause affect my mood?

Yes. Low mood, anxiety and irritability are common around menopause and can be treated. Tell the doctor how you are feeling.
